The Australian Collie

The Kelpie is a herding dog, bred in VIC/NSW in the 1870s from smoothed-coated, pricked-eared Scottish Border Collies to work in the harsh conditions of the Australian outback. It has been said that the wealth of Australia was built off the ‘back of the Kelpie’, undertaking the work of several people, opening the country for large Merino sheep flocks and becoming an Aussie legend. Recently, the Kelpie has gained greater iconic status through the film ‘Red Dog’ (2012), ABC’s ‘Muster Dogs’ series (2022), and a dog of choice in urban Australia.
